Burchard, John

Burchard, John
(d. 1506)
   Bishop and Liturgist.
Burchard was born near Strasbourg, but moved to Rome in c. 1481. He was appointed Master of Ceremonies in 1483 and in 1503 he was consecrated Bishop of Orte and Civita Castellana and was elected to the College of Cardinals. Burchard is remembered for his Ordo Servandus per Sacerdotem in Celebratione Missae which is a collection of rubrics for the celebration of Mass. It was printed in later editions of the Roman Missal and formed the basis of Pius v’s Ritus Celebrandi. His diary is an important source for the history of the Papacy in this period.
